A musketeer of the '1602 Company' dressed in full battle gear, at the Geneva Escalade festival.
He is holding his musket and a burning fuse, ready to fire it, in his left hand. The wooden objects strung on the belt across his chest are containers for gunpowder charges. Each charge is a shot from his musket.
'L'Escalade' (as it is called in French) are celebrations commemorating the defeat of an attack by the Duke of Savoy on the city of Geneva, Switzerland, on the night of 11th/12th December 1602. The celebrations are held on the closest weekend to those dates. Genevans dress up in uniforms and costumes of the time and parade through the streets of the old city to the sound of pipes and drums.
