DP030-2013; Posted January 30; created January 29.

One of my goals for the year, in terms of photography, is to improve my skills in processing photos. Yesterday morning I decided to experiment with my extremely rudimentary skills at compositing. I started with an image of a single thorn on the edge of an agave leaf, cropped to a 2:1 aspect ratio, and its partner, a 180 degree rotation of the original. I constructed a mosaic of repeats of these two images in a fairly regular pattern, then merged all those layers and cropped the result into a square. Links for the repeat unit, and the basic cropped mosaic are given below.
Next I began experimenting with applying various filters and special effects to the mosaic. I've uploaded those results into the same gallery as the starting mosaic, if you're curious. The one I chose to post as today's DP was done by applying the triangle wave effect. Then I did a BW conversion, and tinted it. At that point it reminded me of some Native American weavings I've seen, hence the title. Finally I cropped it to a 3:4 aspect ratio, reduced the image size, and framed it.

I realized early on that I had chosen poorly in my design concept for the mosaic. But it was my first effort, and I had fun doing it.

Marshall Beach Twig
I know, another sunset shot, sorry!!!
I almost didn't go out last night. I got home from work and all I wanted to do is sit on the couch and relax, but I knew the clouds had some serious potential. And since I moved into my new place, which is a few hundred yards from this location, I haven't been to Marshall Beach since my first visit last year. It is one of my favorite locations, and it didn't let me me down at all last night. The sunset blew up and lastest for a while too, giving photographers plenty of time to get all the angles!

Rodeo Beach Long Exposure
Tonight I met up with my buddy +Jameson Savage, to shoot at Rodeo Beach. I haven't been here since last January and my photography has come a long way since then. We were hoping for more of a sunset as the clouds early were screaming awesomeness but not too much color. The clouds made for some great Long Exposure shooting though. Here is one of many shots from tonight.

Impression of the Sonoran desert - filtered treatment in portrait format.

Taken from the roadside, possibly even from the moving car. The original was a flat, poorly focused image. The angle of the light relative to our position, for one thing, and the time of day, for another, weren't conducive to a great shot. But I liked the two large saguaros when I saw them, and I still like the overall composition of the shot. So I fell back on pp'ing with some filters to make the image pop a little more and to make it obvious that I was going for an impression of the scene rather than a strict rendering of it.
