DailyPhoto for Wednesday, April 24, 2013 A shot standing on the east moat bridge looking through the fort walls at Fort Monroe. The house that can be seen through the entrance was the one President Abraham Lincoln stayed in in 1862 when he helped plan the invasion and capture of the rebel-held city of Norfolk, Virginia during the Civil War. Ironically, when the South was defeated in 1865, this was the same bridge and entrance used to escort captured Confederacy President Jefferson Davis to his two year long imprisonment within the walls of fort. Fort Monroe Pet Cemetery DailyPhoto for Wednesday, April 17, 2013 Behind the moat and imposing stone walls of Fort Monroe is a scene that many visitors may not notice. Over the many years of the history of the Fort, many military families have come and gone. Many had pets and some of these beloved pets found their final resting place high up on the earthen ramparts of the Fort, overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. This is a 21 shot blended collage (Microsoft AutoCollage) of some of my favorites from my recent visit there.
