Straight Into The Storm
I was in Iowa City, my hometown, during the winter visiting my family when the weather turned vibrant. Unseasonal warm air came up from the south and started dancing with the crisp ice of the northern December air. This dance caused a superstorm to be born and when the tornado warnings came on I immediately grabbed my camera and ran out the door. I've always been fascinated by tornados and extreme storms in general and chasing them is something I've been doing for years. I drove through the sporadic sputtering rain until I reached the river and when I got out of the car there were these immensely gorgeous purple monsters of clouds rolling angrily across the sky as the sun was setting. Sunsets are always best when there are clouds in the sky, but this moment was especially special because of the scale and grandeur of these sky formations. This shot would have been cool if that was all there was to the story, but just as I was setting up the shot on the riverbank I heard the sound of a flock of geese approaching in the distance. By chance or fate or magic they were coming directly at me and right after they flew over my head I snapped this one of the classic flying V, soaring straight into the storm...
