Velvet Sea 2

I made this image after the blue period had passed. Compared to the previous version (Velvet Sea 1) you can see how the sky has grown darker and the lights from the city and cars glow more prominently from beneath the blanket of fog. The light blue glow in the fog in the distance beyond the bridge comes from downtown San Francisco.
Velvet Sea 1

I made this image just after sunset, on a day where the moon was nearly full which produced this wonderful blue light in the night sky. Photographers like to call this transitional time from day into night the "blue hour".

Earlier in the afternoon I looked out towards the ocean and noticed a thick low fog rapidly approaching the coast. Fog occurs frequently in San Francisco, but most of the time it's so high it completely engulfs the bridge towers. Often the fog rolls in and out so quickly I don't get the chance to get to my secret location in time to set up my gear. I've been searching for just this kind of condition over the Golden Gate Bridge for several years, where the iconic bridge towers pierce the blanket of low fog. This day was different and everything came finally together for me.
