3/12/2013 ~ Along the Boulevard of Broken Dreams I've been on the road the last 3 days, on a very quick mini-trip to the Gulf Coast area of Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi. This shot I made yesterday, of a truly amazing "Castle" house, in Gulfport, Mississippi. This once fine house now sits abandoned, still facing the Gulf of Mexico, and Beach Boulevard. The beautiful Biloxi area was devastated by Hurricane Katrina, in 2005. Much of the horrendous damage escaped news coverage, because the focus was on New Orleans, which flooded when it's levee system failed. Biloxi has come a long way in their recovery efforts, but things will never be the same. Many of the beautiful mansions that lined Beach Boulevard, are completely destroyed. Nothing remains but empty lots, a few still have slabs intact, and some with front steps leading to nowhere. Having seen Biloxi before the hurricane, and seeing it now, is a truly heartbreaking experience. There is a lot of barrel distortion in this image, something I usually try to avoid when photographing architecture. I even corrected it a bit in PS, but this is the best I could get. Using super wide shot was the only way to show the house, and it's amazing view. Maybe one of these days I'll get a tilt-shift! Thank you for all the comments on my water crossing shot yesterday!!
