I went out early for sunrise at Portland Bill, Dorset, England. I photographed the famous red and white lighthouse (completed in 1905) but a little further east along the South West Coast Path you will find dozens of fishermen's huts, and further along some old derricks (wooden cranes) along the cliff edges. The flowers in the foreground are thrift. The coastline around Portland Bill is particularly hazardous, even during Roman times beacon fires would be lit to warn passing ships of the dangers. The area is famous for its Portland limestone. The stone has been used in various famous buildings and monuments including St Paul's Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, United Nations headquarters building in New York City and The Cenotaph, in Whitehall.
