A gregarious cluster of Paropsisterna eucalyptus leaf beetles. These insects are chemically defended and are apparently more successful in advertising that fact in numbers.

Spines on the trunk of a large honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthos) growing in the Crum Woods, Swarthmore College. The spines go up about 20 feet, then stop, leaving the upper part of the tree thornless. I've been told that if you take a cutting from the top and plant it, the resulting tree will be the "thornless" variety that is planted everywhere. But, ultimately, the genes are there and the spineless trees end up producing suckers with spines (like in my yard). That's probably more than you wanted to know.
