Rarely seen snow leopard on a yak kill
A beautiful, rarely seen snow leopard (Panthera uncia) guards the carcass of a yak kill in a snowy valley high in the Himalayas in Ullay valley, Ladakh. These elusive animals, with their superb camouflage are very hard to approach due to past hunting for their predation on local herd animals. This one sustained an injury to her left cheek during the take down and one eye is swollen shut. They now have protected status in the local area. This is about as close as these shy animals can be approached and are close to the the limit of what can be captured with a camera with a long zoom lens. Shot at 700 mm with a 500mm x 1.4 TC mounted on a tripod.
