Gotta Get Outta This Place!
A mannequin dressed as a patient in a wheelchair looking out the window in one of the infirmary rooms at the Fort Davis National Historic Site, Fort Davis, Texas. The infirmary is one of numerous buildings there that have been restored to help portray this part of our nation's history.
Except for the period of the Civil War, between 1854 and 1891 soldiers garrisoned at Fort Davis protected mail and stagecoach routes, policed the Mexican border and fought skirmishes with Comanche and Apache Indians. After the Civil War, the fort, located on the eastern base of the Davis Mountains in West Texas, was staffed by African American soldiers, many former slaves from the south, and white officers.
