Resting Hummingbird
3/13/13 - Hummingbird, photographed at the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum. Many of you mentioned in your comments yesterday that you rarely saw hummers at rest. Actually, they do spend a lot of time sitting. This little guy's tongue is out a bit.

Thanks so much for making my shot of the hummer on the nest the #1 shot for the day. Took me totally by surprise. I've been lucky enough to photograph three hummer nests. All were quite low in trees or shrubs. However, each one that I've photographed was in Arizona...two at the Phoenix Botanic Garden and the other at the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum. Although we had lots of hummers around our home in Colorado Springs, I never managed to spot a hummer's nest there. I did spot something quite unusual here in the Bastrop, Tx yesterday. Several smallish trees around a gas station had many nests in each tree. One must have had 15 - 20 nests in it, all quite close together. I think they may be the nests of some type of grackle, common cowbirds or bronzed cowbirds. I've seen very large flocks of the birds everywhere around here. Do any of you know of this kind of nesting behavior. I'd guess the nest are no more than a foot away from one another. There were several of these small trees by the service station and each one had many nests in it.

Thanks for your warm response to my shot of the horse today! I really enjoyed perusing your comments! Have a great day!
