The three cairns are actually situated in three different locations, one in New York, one in California, and this one in Des Moines. Accompanying the cairn in Des Moines are three edifices, sometimes referred to as walls, made of the same limestone blocks as the cairn, each with a cairn-shaped cavity. They face west, north (toward the Art center itself), and east. This view is to the west, and includes the eastward facing cavity.

The limestone pillars you see in the background aren't part of this sculpture, but line the path from the Art Center to the Rose Garden in Greenwood Park, which surrounds the Art Center. They may have contributed to Goldsworthy's inspiration for his work, after he visited the site where his sculpture was to stand.
