Vintage Irish Republic Railways - Narrow Gauge in Eire - 1954
The last built of the famed 1' 10" gauge Guiness brewery 0-4-0T locomotives, no. 23, photographed at St. James's Gate brewery on 16/9/54.
Andrew Waldron comments: "Guinness No 23 outside the half quarter engine shed, the only such shed of its type. The loco is almost over the big Cowans Sheldon turntable used to turn each loco to access the shed. In this view the loco must have been either in use or about to be put away for the night. After the diesels arrived steam was on standby duty only but I have it that two locos were in use on a day to day basis up to 1955. Until now I knew one was definitely No22, hence your photo proves, I think that No 23 was the other, I had suspected so all along, but as they say photographs can prove the point."
