Thoor Ballylee, County Galway
Yeats's Tower, where he lived for most of the 1920's. The tower is probably 15th century and the bridge about 200 years old. Each of the tower's four floors is a single room with access provided by a spiral stone staircase. Yeats's wife Georgie (affectionately called "George") would fish from the window. It was heavily damaged by floodwaters in the winter of 2009-2010 and has only just begun to reopen. In a scene in "The Quiet Man," John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara frolic through the water here. For John Wayne to "frolic" without a woman present is unimaginable.
