UNITED MERCHANTS – Here’s an aerial view of the industrial site for United Merchants northwest of Nashville and looking toward the southeast. It is bordered on the north by the Nashville-Tifton Road and on the south by the Laconte Road. On the 316 acres will be built a plant which will eventually have 450,000 square feet and in full operation will employ about 1,200 people. The textile plant will be manufacturing and weaving synthetic outerwear of various synthetic yarns and/or cotton. The “grey goods” will be sold to other mills for finishing and printing the desired pattern and color. Another industry to employ about 1,000 is slated to be built southeast of Nashville by Patchogue Plymouth to manufacture woven polypropylene backing for tufted carpeting. This Berrien Press photo was made from a plane of Berrien Aviation Corp. piloted by Clarence Alexander.
