Goodbye to Heritage. With the news this week that the Council have decided to demolish the Preston bus station, after years of deliberation and lots of public protest, I decided it was time to finally shoot this magnificent building. Not just for historical/documentary purposes, but also for more personal reasons, as I recently decided to leave Preston and move further North. The bus station was built between 1968-1969, designed by Keith Ingham and Charles Wilson and built by Ove Arup and Partners. It is one of the UK’s most prominent example of Brutalist architecture and was once claimed as being the second largest bus station in Western Europe. Getting a clear shot of this gem is more difficult these days, given all the fencing that has been erected around the station in the last few years due to a few serious cases of People Walking In Front Of Buses. The only other clear shot I could find involved standing in the way of buses and people.
