Just a few clicks away from Iowa's first paved section of the Lincoln Highway is the historic Abbe Creek School. The site is also the location of the first settler of Linn County - William Abbe. (Note the Lincoln Highway marker in the foreground).
The commemorative plaque outside of the Abbe Creek School provides some detail on the original settler of Linn County.
In 1928, the Boy Scouts across America placed approximately 3,000 cement markers along the route of the Lincoln Highway. Many still stand in their original locations. To date, I have found 3 of them in Linn County...and I am on the lookout for more. :)
Abbe Creek school was organized in 1844 and this structure was built in 1856. It is now maintained as a museum that is open to the public on Sunday afternoons during the months of June, July and August.
Students relied on oil lamps until rural electricity arrived in the 1930's.
