Abandoned Ruins in Dalefield This is the turn-around-point for my jogging route! I run around this area between Queenstown and Arrowtown and end up at this place. Sometimes if I am feeling more full-of-energy (rare), I’ll go a bit longer, but usually not. This is a beautiful place to loop around and begin my return-journey.I don’t know much about this place, other than it is a bit hidden from the road. If you look for it off Speargrass Flats, then you can see it, but you’ll never notice it if you’re just driving down the road like a normal person. I’ve heard they have plays here and have had a few film crews show up. Either way, it’s cool!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Windmill Over Still Lake When does a pond become a lake? Maybe this is a pond. Or maybe a pond is a subset of a lake. I do not know for sure. I could look it up, but I find it more fun to speculate about it.Anyhoo, this serene scene is just another on the back nine of The Hills country club in Arrowtown. If you’re into golf, then this place is a must-visit! Or, if you’re just into photography, then it’s also a must-visit!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Tom with the Horse The first time Tom and I took photos of horses was on Oahu. This was our second horse-encounter here in New Zealand! He got up close with his fisheye while I backed up with the 70-200 f/2.8 to get this shot.I really like those mountains behind Tom. I want to get a shot of them this winter when they are all covered in snow! - Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.

TUHOTO ARIKI _ TUHOURANGI SEER

Somewhat overawed by the mana of this famed possessor of second sight, the warrior listened intently. Tuhoto Ariki found the right moment and spoke softly to him.
“You have an important part to play in Aotearoa’s destiny, my Toa warrior. I was my Tuhourangi tribe’s representative at Kawhia Harbour when the eel pendant of Maui was placed in the care of the Toa priests of Ahurei, and you, your twin and your father Pakau were selected to be its custodians.”
Roa Rua rested contentedly, and ate from clumps of sweet grass that grew by the lake’s edge. The seer knew more of the old prophecy of Maui’s eel pendant and the fate of its holders. Thus, he decided to say no more about it, for it was to be Tawhiri’s journey of discovery, not his own. Another dark prophecy had recently been plaguing the thoughts of Tuhoto Ariki, and he aired this instead.
“My people have always kept the cord of life linked with the spirit of the land. The greatest tohunga ever, Ngatoro-i-te-rangi, trapped Tama-a-Hoi inside Burnt Bird Spear volcano, but I fear that one day the ogre will escape, and wreak vengeance upon those who disregard these sacred treasures of our gods.
I have foreseen the desecration of this beauty, the magnificence you are about to witness, as a signal to the death of the old ways. There will come a time when these wonders of the universe are destroyed because the people of this land forgot that they were sacred, and a gift of the gods like the eel pendant you were chosen to wear.”
“Of what wonders do you speak Tuhoto Ariki?”
“You will soon see a marvel of creation where the geyser pours forth the living waters of life, and carves the finest treasure of our earth, with pools heaped upon pools of steaming blue water, surrounded by the most exquisite carvings of our mother earth Papatuanuku.”
“Am I allowed to bathe there?”
The tohunga answered.
“There is a pool there where journeyers may rest, to the side of the falling terraces. You are a genuine traveller and, therefore, welcome. Your ta-moko tells me that you will one day come to the knowledge of creation, and perhaps learn where the serpent eels that guide our destiny come from.”
