Sunken Road East
In the middle stages of the Battle of Antietam, Confederate infantry commanded by General John Brown Gordon used this sunken fam lane as a natural defensive works. They repeatedly drove back Union assaults until the force of numbers finally overwhelmed them, forcing a withdrawal. This road is known today as "Bloody Lane."
