Heavy equipment is being used outside of the Whispering Maples Mausoleum on Tom Miller Road in Plattsburgh as construction crews begin repairs. In 2015, the New York State Department of Cemeteries declared that mausoleum and the one in Ellenburg to be abandoned cemeteries under state law, due to inadequate revenues and funds to cover future obligations. The towns were ordered to take them over, and a long negotiation process led to the start of renovations. The roof of the Plattsburgh building will be repaired first before interior renovations begin. The project is expected to last about five months. The mausoleums will be closed to visitation during certain times of the construction process.
