Light of Moab, Canyonlands - Utah

This night shot of about 8 seconds, was taken in the Maze District of Canyonlands National Park, and the glow on the horizon is most likely light pollution from Moab, almost 100 miles away.
Spring in the Maze, Canyonlands - Utah

Hundreds of square miles of roadless desert, made almost a forbidden zone by an endless labyrinth of canyons and mesa's, has produced one of the most precious areas in this countries National Parks system. Along with the a strict permitting system, almost no access, and lack of advertising - this area is as much as it was hundreds, if not thousands, of years ago. Trails are almost nonexistent, and to leave any sort of trail means walking on, and destroying, cryptobiotic soil -a delicate crust composed of living cyanobacteria, green algae, brown algae, fungi, lichens, and mosses that, once damaged, can take a century to regrow.
Dreams of Water, Canyonlands - Utah

Water and time have eroded each little crack in the Cedar Mesa Sandstone into a labyrinthine maze of joints, canyons, and potholes. These alternating layers of red and white sandstone are about 280 million years old, and along many of these water-rounded benches can be seen the ancient petrified roots of great trees now lost to time. The sandstone weathers at differing rates, producing harder, flatter domes, and softer tall spires. The chasms between the domes are carved more quickly due to frequent yearly flash floods, producing alleyways between benches only a few yards wide, but a hundred feet deep. This section of The Doll House (a strange small outcropping of stripped minarets), is in the Maze District of Canyonlands National Park, along the hardrock trail to the Green River overlook.
Great Silence, Canyonlands - Utah

Here, in the remote "Maze District" of Canyonlands National Park, you may not encounter any other travelers. The access road is barely more than a professional jeep trail, there are only infrequent, hidden sources of water, and the topography of the canyons (as the word 'maze' implies) forms a labyrinth of dead ends. Here, in this picture, the white sandstone in the middle successfully camouflages at least two deep canyons and all their side canyons. From the rim, the desert appears flat. But from the air, it appears as if a fern had been stomped into the earth by a giant.
I sat here in complete silence for over thirty minutes. It was awe inspiring - such a vast expanse of quiet. No sounds at all. No jets, no cars, no people, no animals, not a whisper of wind - only the weight of silence around my head. It was almost as if you were THE only person in the world.
Red Rock, Canyonlands - Utah

In the middle of the remote Maze District of Canyonlands National park, lies miles of sandstone catacombs and white rock spines bristling with red spires and hoodoos. This image was taken at sunrise from near the Wall camp, looking toward the La Sal Mountains.
Whispering Sky, Canyonlands - Utah

Dawn breaks silently over the minarets of a formation known as "The Dolls House". This distant and remote corner of Canyonlands National Park feels the weight of only a handful of visitors each year, mostly due to the brutal road, lack of water, and restrictive permitting process. You may not see anyone else here in a week - which is a good thing.
Desert Sky, Canyonlands - Utah

Sunrise over the eastern edge of the Maze district of Canyonlands National Park. In the extreme distance, the sandstone spires of the Needles district can be seen - with just the Colorado River separating the two, in a 1200 foot plunge from the desert floor.
