Toward the end of our week in Taos, everyone assembled in the hotel parking lot in the middle of the night, at the ungodly hour of 5 AM … so we could be driven out to the far side of the Rio Grande River gorge bridge, to await the arrival of dawn over the Sangre de Cristo mountains in the east.

No breakfast, no OJ, no coffee, and no talking. We all sat in a silent funk while our van driver drove through the night, depositing us on the western side of the bridge. We had all brought tripods, and we tromped through sagebrush to reach the edge of the gorge (of which you can only see the edge, at the bottom of this photo), whereupon we set our cameras atop the tripods, and waited for the dawn.

For what it's worth, this is a 7-image HDR composite, taken at a fairly slow shutter speed… the camera was on a tripod, but it must have jiggled at bit at some point, because you can see a little bit of a "ghost" image on the right side of the photo.

The view here is facing south, in the general direction that the river flows ...
The sun has been up for almost 15 minutes and the warming light is coloring the cedar forests below Rattlesnake Ledge and lighting the peaks of the Cascade mountains before me.
