LBSCR R. J. Billinton B4 class 4-4-0 no. 60 Kimberley adorned with the Prince of Wales's royal regalia passes southbound through Mitcham Junction station. However .......... What can viewers tell me about this image please?

The auction house notes on the negative's sleeve are, as ever, as useful but less accurate than if IZAL was the text for those of us who recall the joys thereof. Those sleeve notes are, for those sho enjoy cringing, 60 MITNCHAM KING DEMARK ROYAL VISIT and that's verbatim. There is text penned in green ink at the botton left corner of the celluloid (not glass as I had originally stated) but most of it becomes illegible when scanned as film because it simply becomes part of the background which is gravel on the platform. However, one had a bright idea (sic): if the text is penned onto the surface then it might be possible to read it if the film is scanned as a document and that proved to be the case albeit with a little graphics program help and here it is:
PRINCE of WALES
SPECIAL.
PASSING MITCHAM
ENGINE No 60
Sadly, no help at all but at least we now know what the photographer wrote.

I think we can discount any idea of the King of Denmark being on board as there is no historical indication that his visit to London in 1914 would have taken him anywhere near Mitcham.

SECR Wainwright 'H' class 0-4-4T No. 31521 at Mitcham station with regular passenger fare in the form of 2-EPB electric unit No. 5729 alongside. This is looking towards Mitcham and the EMU is working with the headcode still in place at the rear which wasn't unusual on this line. 31521 was allocated to Tunbridge Wells West mpd when this shot was taken and the tour which had originated at Beckenham Junction included West Croydon to Merton Park followed by a jaunt along the stub of line to Merton Abbey.
As I've received a second message about the headcode at the rear it's repeated here: "the 2-EPBs in the rear red oil lamp days never changed the headcodes at their rears on Central Division's No.2 shuttles. This practice ceased when the oil lamps were replaced by the red blinds in the headcode apertures."
