SmugMug > all-time keyword > mndse > On 17 September at 1740 (local) a two-vehicle British routine patrol was ambushed in Basrah City by small arms fire from the offices of the Matry Sad'r. The decision was then taken to launch an immediate surgical strike of the Offices of the Marty Sad'r building, from where the ambush had been initiated. The purpose of this strike was to eliminate the obvious threat posed by the attackers, to provide a safe and secure environment for the local population and to allow the Multi National Forces to continue with their programme of rebuilding Iraq. An operation to secure the building and arrest those responsible for the unprovoked attack. Specialist bomb-disposal experts were required to defuse a number of defensive booby-traps left behind by the terrorists. On searching the building the British troops discovered a huge haul of illegally held weapons and munitions, including 200 mortar rounds, approximately 50,000 heavy machine-gun bullets, 5 guided missiles, 50 rocket propelled grenades, land mines and a large number of AK 47 rifles. The building also contained old maps and reconnaissance photographs , highlighting Multi National Force positions. In addition to the maps and weapons found, a large amount of cocaine was also discovered in the offices.
Under increasing attacks of small arms fire, heavy machine guns, rocket propelled grenades and indirect mortar attacks from the surrounding buildings. The militia destroyed the local power sub-station, throwing much of the city into darkness, thus aiding their ability to attack from hidden positions. The attacks continued through the night and the British soldiers returned controlled fire. The fire-fights continued to the early hours of the following morning when they eventually came to a halt. During the entire sequence of events the British soldiers sustained just one casualty.
This represents a very successful operation for the Multi National Forces in South-Eastern Iraq

A parade in Baghdad to mark the 50th anniversary of the Queen’s Ghurkha Signals’ (QGS) cap badge was also a family celebration, when a father met up with his two sons for the first time in six years.
The parade at Maude House in Baghdad commemorated one held 50 years earlier in Kuala Lumpur at which the then Ghurkha Royal Signals received their cap badge. All QGS serving in Iraq attended the parade, including former Warrant Officer Hariaya Tamang and his sons Corporal Dughendra and Sapper Tamba.
GS Commanding Officer (Iraq) Major Ade Clewlow said:
When I asked Sapper Tamang to play the pipes at the parade, he told me his brother was also in Iraq, based like him at Shaibah Logistics Base near Basrah. He also told me his father was now working for a civilian security company in Baghdad. They had not seen their father together for six years. It seemed only natural to bring them together on this special day. It was a very special day for everyone, not just celebrating our badge’s half century, but also seeing a family meet up after so long.”
The parade coincided with one at QGS’ UK home in Bramcote, which included some soldiers from the original parade in 1954, who been specially flown back from Nepal for the occasion. The Baghdad parade was a huge success, attended by all the serving Ghurkhas currently in Iraq as well as ex-serving members working for a security company in Baghdad. The Senior British Military Representative (Iraq), General John McColl CBE DSO, was the inspecting officer and cut the celebratory birthday cake.
The 246 Ghurkha Signal Squadron, part of 2 Signal Regiment, are currently based at Maude House, within the green zone of Baghdad, at Shaibah Logistics Base and Basra. They deployed from Imphal Barracks, York on 1st July 04 for six months.
