January 24, Forest Hills, NY: Relaxed. Still reflecting on Tuesday. The sense of unity reminded me of only one other time I can remember. October 14, 1995. The Million Man March. I caravaned to D.C. from Northwestern with a group of guys from the Black Student Alliance. To see so large a group of Black men gathered, peaceful, together on the National Mall was completely overwhelming. That day I listened to the speakers from a spot to the north of the Washington Monument, the same as I did last Tuesday. I couldn't have imagined that a dozen years later I would join men and women of all races on the Mall to replicate that sense of togetherness. My mind's most lasting images are of legions of Black people waving American flags, singing America the Beautiful, and crying during the Star-Spangled Banner. All things I have never seen before and hope never go away.

January 18, Washington, D.C.: There was a time when I was a kid when I thought my mother would never really find happiness. I would be speaking out of turn to say that she once felt the same, but I will do it anyway. I guess I felt that way until about October 14, 1995. Thats when she remarried. Life had a great way of working out for her in the end. For years now, I have seen how happy she is. Its a stark contrast to what I observed growing up, but I am so glad that she found a person and a life that makes her happy.
