    • Drops of fog condensing on conifer needles, 17 mm. One of the reasons I'm passionate about wide angles is their ability to bring together disparate parts of a scene and present them in a way which our eyes and brain would not normally perceive them. Actually, I'm dissatisfied with this shot. The foreground in the top right distracts form the background and throws out the compositional balance that I was looking for. But I still like it, mainly for the way in which as you look more closely more detail becomes apparent. So in it goes! D800, Tokina 17/3.5 @ f/11, 1/30s
    • I woke up one morning in Autumn 2013 to see the trees to the East of our terraced house wreathed in fog. Ignoring my wife's cries of distress when she found me hanging out of our spare bedroom window, letting the freezing air in, trying to get a shot of the trees in the fog. It changes so much how we perceive our environment, in much the same was a a skilled photographer can isolate a subject from a busy background. Too good a day to miss, so I grabbed the camera and the (also protesting) dog and went up to the Grove. D800, 35/1.4G @ f/5.6, 1/80s
    • I love the fog. Not only is the park deserted, but everything seems so still and quiet as the water vapour in the air damps out the usual London background hum. Did I also mention that I love wide angles? D800, Tokina 17/3.5 @ f/11, 1/80s
    • Alexandra Palace is a place of extraordinary beauty, although sometimes I find myself having to really look for it. This elusiveness seems to mirror the chequered past of the venue. Perhaps it is the fate of all of these great public works that no-one seems to quite know what to do with them once they have been built. It takes time for them to become integrated fully into the gestalt of London. However, once there, they become the source of immense pride, however flawed their beauty or impractical their use. Ally Pally is once again being renovated and redeveloped, which I think is wonderful. I am saddened that more recent public works (the Millennium Dome, the Stratford Olympic Park) don't have the same creative energy. Hubris is not always negative. D800, 50/1.4D @ f16, 1/80s
    • This tree is powerfully evocative of Dr Seuss... it would fit right into one of his surreal landscapes that is so redolent of childhood. I walk with my kids here at very least twice a week and it reminds me of how surreal the whole experience of being a child is. It was also a difficult photograph to frame... I think I was on one knee on my back (think about it!) in the rain while the dog looked on in disgust. Used my favourite lens, my 20mm. If I could be bothered to lug a tripod on my normal walks I would have, as 1/40s is pushing it handhled when straining for a picture. D800, 20/2.8D @ f/8, 1/40s
    • And here is said long-suffering dog. Normally the composition here would have been very busy and distracting from Murphy standing patiently while I messed with different lenses, but the fog changed everything. I used an infrequent lens, my Tokina 17/3.5 MF. I acquired it when I was looking for wide angles with my D200 on an APS sensor, but have since discovered the joys of extreme wide-angle on the full-frame D800. Having said that, it ofetn won't come on walks as I'm generally lugging four fast primes with me as my standard kit. Getting shots like this makes lugging the weight worthwhile.
