Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. This is the ruins of St. Thomas à Becket’s church, Heptonstall, West Yorkshire. Founded circa 1260, it was altered and added to over several centuries, eventually succumbing to a gale in 1847. As a result, a new church, St Thomas the Apostle, was built in the same churchyard. This suffered a lighting strike in 1875. You can see its tower in the distance. Near the porch of the ruins, you can still find the grave of David Hartley, ‘King’ of the Cragg Vale Coiners, who was hanged for counterfeiting in 1770. The churchyard also holds the grave of poet Sylvia Plath, author of works such as “Ariel”. Plath, wife of Poet Laureate Ted Hughes, took her own life in 1963. The weather blessed me today: no rain at all, slight breeze if none at all, and totally clear skies save for the occasional whispy clouds. These came alight with soft pinks once the sun had set. I was also blessed with a lack of tourists, as this is a pretty popular place to visit. Perhaps people aren’t sunset chasers like me…

20 Feb 2013 The ring around the Moon is caused by the refraction of Moonlight (which of course is reflected sunlight) from ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. The shape of the ice crystals results in a focusing of the light into a ring. Since the ice crystals typically have the same shape, namely a hexagonal shape, the Moon ring is almost always the same size.
