1b. I reported to Pensacola on August 14, 1969, just as Hurricane Camille was arriving on the coast of Mississippi. I had driven my new blue 1969 Chevrolet straight down U.S. 45 from Humboldt to Mobile (got my first speeding ticket in Scuba, Mississippi) and stayed a day or maybe two with cousin Harry Jr, Tut and the kids. Then as they were leaving on vacation, I followed them out of town eastward across the bay and said good bye to them at Spanish Fort. Then I realized I had left my military orders at the restaurant on Old Shell Rd near their house. Back I drove across the bay and thru town to claim them, then back across the bay and on to Pensacola.
1b. The air station is on the coast. That's Sherman Air Field in the background. The air station is a NAVAL Air Station and I was a Marine, so I checked in at the USMC headquarters, called M.A.D. - Marine Aviation Detachment. The Commanding Officer was Col Donald Conroy, later made famous by his son, Pat, in the book "The Great Santini", which later became a popular movie in the early 1980s. After completing admin stuff with MAD, I was transferred into the hands of the Navy for flight school.
*The ARC Gloria*
I was just sitting, shooting surf and the awesome swells that all the surfers where drooling over. Too my right the sun rays blasting through the clouds had me drooling though. To my left a rainbow even started forming. So many things were were going on I needed 4 cameras and 4 clones of me to get it all haha.

What had me really focused was this ship out at sea. The way the light was hitting it, was just perfect. I knew right as I took it, it woudl make a perfect black & white. So here it is! I later found out this ship was the ARC Gloria, a Colombian Navy training ship, a three-masted sailing vessel and is the pride of Colombia’s Navy and was in Hawaii for a three-day stay. Glad I was there to get it!

I originally only rented a water housing from Hawaii Photo Rental but ended up getting a 2x extender for my 70-200mm. It certainly came in handy, more then housing surprisingly!

This is one shot.
