Jun 29, 2008 - Stockholm, Sweden - The U.S.S Cole harbored in Stockholm whilst participating in BALTOPS, a Baltic sea naval exercise. The USS Cole (DDG-67) is an Arleigh Burke-class Aegis-equipped guided missile destroyer homeported in NS Norfolk, Virginia. On October 12, 2000, the Cole was damaged by a suicide attack while harbored in the Yemeni port of Aden. Seventeen sailors were killed and thirty nine others were injured in the blast. The attack was the deadliest against a US Naval vessel since the Iraqi attack on the USS Stark (FFG-31) on May 17th, 1987. The attack, organized and directed by Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda terrorist organization, was carried out by suicide bombers Ibrahim al-Thawr and Abdullah al-Misawa.
