Non-Quantum Entanglement14 May 2013 -- 134/365North Providence, Rhode IslandThere's little doubt that I'm not a gardener. I absolutely hate puttering around in the yard. That would explain why these azalea and lilac bushes are now intertwined, each engaged in a land grab the likes of which we haven't seen since the Oklahoma Territories were opened. Both of these bushes are in very good health, so I do need to make an effort to reign them in a bit. I adjusted adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, and adaptive saturation. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.
Fizzbin10 May 2013 -- 130/365North Providence, Rhode IslandStar Trek aficionados may remember a card game Kirk and Spock invented in the episode called "A Piece of the Action." The game was called "Fizzbin" and Kirk kept adding increasingly strange and random rules, attempting to confuse their captors and provide an opportunity for escape. The strange web of rules always reminded me of the normal card game "Cribbage". As much as I enjoy Cribbage, I'm convinced it was invented by two stoned mathematicians trying to pass the time between sets at Woodstock. It will also likely evolve into Fizzbin by the 24th Century.Post processing today started with a warm tone II filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, protect highlights, boost black, and boost white. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.
Flowering Pink09 May 2013 -- 129/365North Providence, Rhode IslandMy neighbor has a large - at least 15-feet tall - bush that produces these subtle pink flowers every spring. They were in full bloom today, so I took this opportunity to photograph them. I've no idea what type of bush this is, so if anyone can identify the flowers, please comment. The green background is actually her lawn. I was shooting down at the flowers using a shallow DoF.Post processing started with a brilliant warm filter in Topaz Adjust. I also adjusted adaptive exposure, regions, and contrast. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.
Spring Blooms07 May 2013 -- 127/365North Providence, Rhode IslandThe azaleas my mom planted in 1971 are in full bloom, thanks to a week of real spring-like weather. I was hoping to photograph some pollination action, but there wasn't a bee in sight. The lilacs are starting to bloom, though, and those typically draw them so hopefully in a week or so I'll be able to show some insect life on the flowers.Post processing started with a warm tone I filter in Topaz Adjust. I then adjusted adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.
Faded Beauty01 May 2013 -- 121/365North Providence, Rhode IslandAs usual, I went for my morning walk before work. The sun was barely over the horizon when I spotted this lone flower struggling to grow in sparse dirt next to a whitewashed fence. It's not my normal type of subject, but I just had to give this one a try. As part of my post-processing, I wanted to emphasize the poor whitewash job on the fence. It tells you, if nothing else, something about the environment in which this flower is struggling to grow. The flower itself, thanks to a less-than-nurturing environment, is a pale version of what, under better conditions, it could truly be. I tried to capture that feeling as well. It's standing tall, it's in full bloom, but it could be so much more. The gritty feel to the image is intended to convey that overall mood.Post processing started with a brilliant warm filter in Topaz Adjust. I then adjusted adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, and saturation. I added a levels adjustment in PSE, then adjusted each of the color saturations individually to produce the final effect.
On Eagle's Wings29 April 2013 -- 119/365North Providence, Rhode IslandI'm scheduled for a two-day off-site meeting that will run late into the evening both today and tomorrow. The location in today's photo - the World War I memorial in North Providence - is one of my "safety shot" sites since it's only a couple of minutes from my house. The memorial was erected in 1919 in Greystone Village. At the time, the village was a working class mill community, and the grit from that era certainly comes through in the rust on the eagle bust, and in the texture of the wall behind it. The mill that dominated the community is now a condominium, but the row houses that were home to the mill workers still exist.Post processing started with a detail medium filter in Topaz Adjust. I adjusted adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, and brightness. A levels adjustment and a hue/saturation adjustment were added in PSE.
Roadside Chapel26 April 2013 -- 116/365North Providence, Rhode IslandThis small chapel, barely large enough to hold one person, was here long before I moved to North Providence in 1970. I've never been able to determine who built it or why they placed it here. I haven't seen the doors open in several years, which is unfortunate since there used to be an altar with candles inside that would be an interesting addition to the photo. Chapels like this are common in parts of Europe and Latin America, however it's rare to encounter one like this in the States. I'd love to get the details on its history.I've been waiting to photograph this spot since last spring. There's a very brief period when the tree behind it has those beautiful pink blossoms, and I needed a bright sunlit day like today to really highlight their color. Having missed the opportunity last spring, I was fortunate to find just the right conditions today.Post processing started with a brilliant warm filter in Topaz Adjust. I then adjusted adaptive exposure, contrast, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.
One Ringy Dingy...19 April 2013 -- 109/365North Providence, Rhode IslandFor those that don't recognize it, this is a telephone. For those that do recognize it, let me explain why I'm not taking that for granted. Until recently, the only phone my next door neighbor had was a rotary phone not unlike this one. Her granddaughter was there one afternoon and asked if she could call her friend. (The girl was about 9 years old at the time.) After several attempts at placing the call, the girl told her grandmother that the phone wasn't working. The problem, however, was that she had never used a rotary phone. She was pressing the numbers and wondering why nothing was happening! The phone in this photo has been in my family since 1971. Surprisingly, it still works. It's connected to a wall jack in my basement, which explains the grunge, grease, and grime that represents 42 years of basement abuse. It also comes in handy when there's a power outage since it's the only phone in my house that does not have to be plugged into an electrical outlet to work. There's something to be said for simplicity.Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders followed by adaptive exposure, boost black, boost white, contrast, and protect highlights. In PSE I added a levels adjustment and a sepia photo filter.
The Peanut Gallery16 April 2013 -- 106/365North Providence, Rhode IslandIt seems that the days I work from home rapidly turn into the days where I have the least amount of time available to get out for a photo. Today's photo plans were preempted just as I headed for the car, and with tonight's weather forecast turning south rapidly, I opted for a backyard safety shot. A 42-year old picket fence has amazing textures that make an interesting black and white background. I decided to photograph the little wooden feeder my dad uses to leave peanuts for the squirrels. (They have him well trained...) The ragged state of the pickets is a result of the aggressive way the squirrels defend those peanuts from each other. Sharing is definitely not in the rodent vocabulary.Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders followed by adaptive exposure, boost black, boost white, and contrast. A levels adjustment and a sepia photo filter were added in PSE.
Non-Quantum Entanglement
14 May 2013 -- 134/365
North Providence, Rhode Island

There's little doubt that I'm not a gardener. Of course, I know absolutely nothing about caring for either, so, as IBM would say, "Results may be unpredictable."

Post processing started with a detail light filter in Topaz Adjust. I adjusted adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, and adaptive saturation. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.
