The drive to Toroweap should only be made in a 4x4 high clearance vehicle. The first 55 miles (yes 55!) is on a washboard dirt road. But the last few miles are extremely rough, much of it through soft, deep sand, and sharp as glass lava rock. There is NO phone service, and likely no other human being around for miles. The view was stunning! Long, straight views of the canyon and Colorado River. Well worth the ride. We drove in my Jeep Wrangler, but they do have tour guides who can take you.

4/17/2013 ~ The Grand Canyon North Rim at Toroweap Point

Toroweap Point is a sight few visitors to the Grand Canyon ever see. I read somewhere that fewer than 1/10 of 1% of visitors to the park make the drive to Toroweap, but 1/4 of those who do get at least one flat tire. The drive to Toroweap should only be made in a 4x4 high clearance vehicle. The first 55 miles (yes 55!) are on a washboard of a dirt road. A bit unpleasant, but easily doable in dry weather. But the last few miles are extremely rough, much of it through soft, deep sand, and sharp-as-glass lava rock. There is NO phone service, and likely no other human being around for miles, and for who knows how long. 'Remote' is an understatement. But to stand at the edge of a 3000' foot drop and stare straight down to the Colorado River below, was worth the drive and the chance of being stranded. The view of the river is so far below, but yet you can hear the faint roar of Lava Falls. Considered to be the ultimate in rafting adventure, the falls are rated a Class 10 in degrees of difficulty. This is also a nesting area for the critically endangered California Condor. I was thrilled when I saw one flying in the canyon below!
