Originally built in 1925, the Second Narrows Bridge, connecting Vancouver with North Vancouver, was used by both vehicles and trains. After the larger Ironworkers Memorial Bridge was built parallel to it in 1960, it was converted for use by trains only, and then replaced in 1969 with a much higher lift section to allow for larger ship traffic.
The Second Narrows Bridge, built in 1960 and connecting Vancouver with North Vancouver, is a beautiful example of steel truss cantilever bridge design. The bridge was renamed in 1994 to the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge to honour the workers that died while constructing it in 1958.
