It was not easy getting out to this last traditional village in Fiji, but it is doable.  It’s located on the main island.  Here are the directions:

First, hire a guide.  Second, rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle.  Third, buy some kava at one of the markets to present to the chief upon arrival.

Once I got there, I had a kava ceremony with the chief where he gave me his blessing to roam around the village and take pictures.  However, I did not feel overly safe as every male I encountered was carrying a machete.  I felt like at anytime I was going to be the idiot who brought a camera to a knife fight.  But since I’m still here writing this and posting this beautiful picture, nothing bad happened.  Everyone was very kind and welcoming. They even offered for me to stay for a couple of days.

I had a long day on New Years Eve, so I was sleeping when the ball dropped for Western New Year’s.  No worries though: time to dive headfirst into the photo art deep end…

What I had to start with was just an image of the building on the left.  I stretched out the building, then made a mirror copy.  I did all that with the idea of photoshopping fireworks into the vacant center. I played around with what kind of fireworks I wanted before deciding on a heart outline with a center burst. I think it turned out fantastically.
