The Road to the Galibier

The Col du Galibier is one of the most famous cols of the French Alps, mostly thanks to the Tour de France that already passed there 59 times. It is located at 2,642 meters between the departments of Savoy and Southern High-Alps.

The road was built between 1880 and 1891. It is only open during the summer. Indeed, during the cold season, it is invariably covered with tons of snow and ice, making it just impossible to follow.

This shot was taken on April 12th, 2013, one of the first days of the spring there in the Alps. The snow was quickly melting and I could hear the sound of many avalanches in the distance.
Le Grand Galibier

Valloire, France, April 7th, 2013…

Le Grand Galibier is located in the Massif des Cerces, at the edge of both the departments of Savoy and High-Alps. It tops at 3229 meters and overhangs the famous Col du Galibier, one of the toughest Alpine cols in cycling history.

I definitely love the mountains! The nature is just beautiful, majestic and charming but can also be surprising, frightening, dangerous. It constantly reminds us that we, human beings, are not as powerful as we are used to think. And that, for sure, is a good lesson for any of us.
Heights

-15°C and a wind that could freeze anything or anyone in just a second. The light was almost surreal: blue, with a bit of red at the same time. That was sunset in the mountains, where the altitude makes the sky darker, the light stronger and the snow whiter.

I set up my tripod in a hurry a took that shot in a minute. Indeed, light, as well as weather conditions, may change so quickly in altitude. Hence, it was sunset and again, night comes so quickly there that I just had no way but shooting very fast. That was just a demonstration of the power of nature.
Acqua Alta

Saturday, March 30th, 2013, Venice, Italy.

It was close to 21:00 when the sirens that announce the exceptional tide peaks that sometimes occur in the northern Adriatic Sea rang throughout the city. I was in my hotel room when I heard the alert system announcing a very intense phenomenon, around 135 cm above the standard. I decided then to prepare my equipment for a walk to Piazza San Marco and its surroundings while the water was slowly invading the streets and pavements of the city.
af Chapman

Saturday 23rd of February, 2013, Stockholm, Sweden. Sunrise or sunset? Well… it was 7:10 AM :-)

I really love that view of Skeppsholmen, one of the most famous islands of Stockholm. I’ve already photographed it by day, by night, by sunset and… sunrise. In my humble opinion, that is a perfect illustration of the city of Stockholm: a subtle yet beautiful match of an elegant architecture, the sea, the boats, the nature. The beauty of Scandinavia.

The old sailing ship is the af Chapman, a 1888 vessel that was used as a training ship by the Swedish Army before serving as barracks during World War II. It is now owned by the Swedish Tourist Association and serves as a youth hostel.
San Marco

It was 16:14 on the 4th of February, 1013. I was on the top of the Campanile on Piazza San Marco, the famous bell tower of one of the most famous places in the world. As the sun was slowly setting down on the Grand Canal, I could admire breathtaking views of that beautiful city: the medieval palaces and churches, the laguna, the canals, the gondolas… all those elements that build the magic.

The cable in the sky was installed for “Il volo dell’angelo”, the Flight of the Angel.
The Ring

“One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.”

J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

Skeppsholmen by Night

Looks like the middle of the night but it only was 18:15 PM, saturday 23rd of February, 2013, Stockholm, Sweden.

At that time of the year in Sweden, this is still midwinter. The days are short, the weather is cold, snowy and the sea may be frozen… or almost. On that particular evening, the -10°C wind was freezing my fingers as I was setting up my tripod and camera to take that shot of Skeppsholmen by night, one of the islands of Stockholm. That island is positioned strategically at the entrance of Stockholm from the Baltic Sea and, consequently, was a traditional location for military buildings. Nowadays, museums have replaced military facilities, such as Stockholm’s Museum of Modern Art.

The Carnival of Venice... Definitely one of the most beautiful carnivals of the whole world!

Although Venice is a once in a lifetime place to visit, seeing the Serenissima during the Carnival is a totally unique experience thanks to the atmosphere created by thousands of Venice lovers posing with beautiful, extravagant yet very elegant disguises. The whole city breathes with the Carnival, vibrates with the Carnival, lives with the Carnival. Even tourists eventually play the game, wearing small masks or hats in order to participate, just for a while, to the overall spectacle. I could go there again and again...

This picture was taken from the Piazzetta, next to the Palazzo Ducale, with the Basilica di San Giorgio Maggiore in the background.
