I don't think of you
New York City Sunset - Skyline - By Vivienne Gucwa

I never really get tired of this view.

I know I have expressed that sentiment many times but it's absolutely true. There's something incredibly breathtaking that occurs when you are above the rooftops of the city. It's as if the city shrinks below a vast sky in a huge universe and everything that once seemed impossible seems effortless and within the realm of possibility.

It's so easy to forget that sort of thing when you live in a large city like New York City. When you are in the thick of it all, it can feel like the you are alone in a never-ending maze of cavernous streets as everyone else's dreams and hopes fly past you at the speed of light. But when you take yourself out from the middle of everything and change your perspective, it's as if the city holds its arms out to you beckoning you to come back and put your own dreams out there so they can spread their wings and fly up to the sky towards the horizon leaving a trail of hope in their path.

This was taken from the top of Rockefeller Center (also known as Top of the Rock) and it's probably one of the most popular views of the New York City skyline since it includes the Empire State Building and the skyscrapers of midtown Manhattan. The view is looking south towards One World Trade Center (also known as the Freedom Tower and 1 WTC) and the skyscrapers of the Financial District.

Willamsburg Bridge - New York City - By Vivienne Gucwa

This was taken on a frigid, moody day in the winter looking down the pedestrian walkway of the Williamsburg Bridge in New York City.

The Williamsburg Bridge connects the Lower East Side in Manhattan with Williamsburg in Brooklyn.

When things are at extreme, sometimes polarities just flip …
I am so close, I may look distant.
So completely mixed with you, I may look separate.
So out in the open, I appear hidden.
So silent, because I am constantly talking with you.
     - Rumi

The below shot is a moon set, yes you read that right, it is the moon set and not sun set. It was one of those rare twilight moments during the beginning of the harvest months, when the moon is fiery, large & bright - due to its low position in the horizon. The colors were as is and not modified. You can read more about the shot in this older post from last harvest.
Under the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge - New York City - By Vivienne Gucwa

I had a recurring dream when I was younger that puzzled me for years. It involved boarding a hovering bubble shaped vehicle and ascending over the skyscrapers until I was soaring under the bridges and through the cavern-like spaces of the city. It was euphoric but also terrifying at the same time. When I was older, I finally relayed the dream to someone and they laughed and asked if I had ever taken the Roosevelt Island tram when I was very young. I had no recollection of it. It prompted me to ask my mother if we had ever done such a thing and she said it was possible but she couldn’t remember a specific time that we would have done it (my mother, like me, is absolutely terrified of heights). It’s possible that my family took the tram to Roosevelt Island at some point and the experience embedded itself deep into my imagination where it mixed with other flights of fancy (pun intended) of flying through a Gotham-like city like Batman.

So, when I found myself photographing the underbelly of the 59th Street Bridge (also known as the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge or just the Queensboro Bridge) late last week, it was hard not to recall those earlier dreams and feelings they invoked while I stood there waiting for the long exposure to capture 30 seconds of what had haunted me for years. The bridge is one of my favorite ones in the city. Its architecture is distinctive when viewed from the side but I absolutely love how slick and dripping-with-sci-fi-overtones it appears when viewed from below. The bridge travels from darkness into the light of a gleaming New York City as the water below it only stirs with the occasional disruption of a boat. You can also make out the cables that the Roosevelt Island tram travels on to the right of the bridge.

Adios Oregon
With a heavy heart, contemplation, reflection and open mind - I bid good bye to the beautiful Oregon, that pretty much had become my second home ! I will continue to share the beauty of Pacific NW (Still have gigs of shots to process from the previous years :)) and looking forward to that. Open to next opportunities, heading out to urban city of Chicago – exited to explore what life has in store !!!
New York City Skyline - Skyscrapers of the Financial District as seen from Midtown - By Vivienne Gucwa

I love the variety of skyscrapers that make up the New York City skyline in lower Manhattan. They jut up like stalagmites from the city floor. This skyline view is usually photographed from the other side usually across the East River but this is a view of the skyline as seen from midtown Manhattan. Prominent works of architecture include New York by Gehry and the Municipal Building.

Drive up, Get out, Get lost
One of the reason I love the Pacific Northwest if for moments like these. The coast is so long and varied, that you can find your own personal spot(s). I call is personal, cause in those few places you instantly feel connected – kind of a bridge between thrust urban and the subtle but all encompassing nature. The below is one such lovely remote spot between cannon beach and new port – where you just drive up, get out and get lost - in the beauty of the ocean as the sun bids adieu for the day over the horizon.
