Tower Bridge, London

January 5th, 2013, South Bank, London.

At that time of the year, the night falls over London at around 4 PM. The air was humid, the sky was overcast, the wind was ice cold. Fortunately, London is so rich in beautiful spots and monuments that a walk, even under stormy conditions, is definitely worth it. That night, I was wandering along the South Bank of the River Thames, from Westminster Bridge to the east when, after a long while lost in my thoughts, I stumbled on the magnificent Tower Bridge and the Tower of London.

Even though the Tower of London – its real name is “Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress” – was built in the Middle Ages by William the Conqueror in 1078 and has played since a prominent role in the English and UK’s history, the Tower Bridge is actually a way more recent construction. It was bruit between 1886 and 1894 and has by the way no connection to the English medieval history. Nevertheless, that night, both those monuments recalled so strongly the medieval power of the Kingdom of England and gave some more drama to the overall atmosphere of that cold night.
Odeon Leicester Square, London

In the West End of London, just next to Charing Cross Road lies the famous Leicester Square. The square was already mentioned in the 17th Century and was one of the most important spots of London. By the 19th Century, Leicester Square was known as London’s entertainment venue with many amusements peculiar to the era.

Nowadays, Leicester Square is definitely the centre of London’s cinema house with both the two most famous and largest cinemas of the UK, the Odeon Leicester Square and the Empire.

The Odeon Leicester Square dominates the square with its huge black polished granite facade. It was built in 1937 to be the flagship of Oscar Deutch’s Odeon Cinema Circuit. It still holds that position today since it remains the largest cinema of the United Kingdom with capacity for 1683 people. It also had the first digital projector in Europe in 1999. It is the place of many world and Europe premieres: the world premieres of the James Bond series, Harry Potter, Avatar, Alice in Wonderland and Shrek are just some examples.
20th Century Fine Prints

A couple of minutes away from Leicester Square and its famous agitation, there’s a charming pedestrian street with Victorian shop-frontages that links Charing Cross Road to St. Martin’s Lane in Covent Garden. Cecil Court dates back to the 17th Century and, from a tradesman’s route at the beginning, became over the course of time the temporary house of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1764 (for four months) and an important focus of the early British cinema industry.

Since the 30′s, it is known to bibliophiles as the new Bookseller’s Row. It houses almost twenty antiquarian, second-hand independent bookshops, art galleries and fine art dealers. It’s definitely worth the visit for everyone who wants to feel, just for a while, the true British atmosphere.
