"FLAPPER BAGS"

"Those who corrupt the public mind are just as evil as those who steal from the public purse." ~ Adlai E. Stevenson

"Beaded and mesh handbags, which had been popular until the 1900's, made a brief comeback with the "Flapper Bags" of the 1920's. Just large enough to carry a few necessary items, these bags were a stylish compliment to the sophisitcated beaded dresses of the era. Many ladies made their own bags, often using designs they had created themselves. The bag with the mulit-colored fringe beads is probably a handcrafted item." ~ Text reprinted from the card shown in the glass case

Thanks for your comments on the "It Is What It Is" photo yesterday of President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama. Despite the "red bandit" and the fact that the photo disappeared from the dailies several times, it was the #17 photo of the day. I must admit that they looked stellar last night (at the Commander-In-Chief Inaugural ball at the Washington Convention Center during the 57th Presidential Inauguration) and Michelle's dress was "off the chain" and of course, in my favorite color.......red!! She is one fashion-forward First Lady.

Have a terrific Tuesday!

"CHRISTMAS SPLENDOR - 2"

"Don't measure the height of your Christmas tree. Measure the abundance of the love present in your heart." ~ Anonymous

12 days until Christmas.............

This is the full-length view of my favorite Christmas tree; yesterday's photo was of its base. In her comment on yesterday, Karen (aka kjakes1) inquired about a full-length view of this tree. Well, it was uploaded and awaiting its debut today:). Also, "Christmas Splendor" was sponsored by Travel Leaders and designed by Mid-South Women's Connection. It won 1st place for "Most Traditional."

Hang in there; tomorrow is Friday.

"OUR FUTURE IS IN OUR HANDS"

"The future is in our hands. We are not hapless bystanders. We can influence whether we have a planet of peace, social justice, equity, and growth or a planet of unbridgeable differences between peoples, wasted resources, corruption, and terror." ~ James D. Wolfensohn in "A Better World Is Possible," July-Aug 2003

I love this tree topper and the royal blue and metallic gold are pretty color combinations. The "Our Future Is In Our Hands" Christmas tree was sponsored by International Paper and designed by Dr. W.H. Brewster Elementary School students (Ms. H. Ferguson's Kindergarten Class and Ms. A. Martin's Exceptional Learners Class). Additionally, after photographing the Christmas tree, the principal arrived and posed in front of the tree to have her picture taken. The school's website is here: www.mcsk12.net/schools/brewster.es/index.htm

“Christmas doesn't come from a store, maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more....” ~ Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas

My Second Favorite Christmas Tree.......sponsored by UCA/Varsity and designed by Junior Troop 10053. It won 2nd place for "Best Theme."

Your comments on the "A Charlie Brown Christmas" tree yesterday are very kindly appreciated. While growing up, I loved watching Charles "Charlie" Brown, the protagonist in the comic strip Peanuts, by Charles M. Schulz. Apparently, so did many of my fellow SmugMuggers:).

Happy Monday and have a great start to the work week, everyone.

"PINK CHRISTMAS"

"A smile is a curve that sets everything straight." ~ Phyllis Diller

I really liked this cute, fun, and whimsical ornament that was hanging on a Christmas tree titled "Pink Christmas." The first thought that came to my mind was, "If you're happy and you know it, then your face will surely show it," lyrics from a popular repetitive children's song, stemming from an old Latvian folk song. Unfortunately, the tree did not have a sponsor, but it was designed by Phi Mu Fraternity (a women's organization - contrary to its name).

This is the base of my favorite Christmas tree this year - "Christmas Splendor," sponsored by Travel Leaders and designed by Mid-South Women's Connection. It won 1st place for "Most Traditional." I loved the entire tree, but couldn't resist this close-up shot of what was under the tree.

"MODEL T FORD SERVICE STATION EXHIBIT"

"A traveler without observation is a bird without wings." ~ Moslih Eddin Saadi

I will catch up on posting comments later.

This exhibit is located directly across from the entrance to the Piggly Wiggly Store Replica. The information card beside the vehicle reads, "This 1923 Ford looks very much like the model produced in 1922 or 1924. Henry Ford believed that his cars should be plain, reliable, and long lasting. They were not fashion statements. He left that to the new General Motors brand of automobiles."

Also, according to the official Model T website: "Henry Ford did not invent the automobile or the assembly line. He did, however, change the world by using an assembly line technique to produce cars which could be afforded by everyone. From 1909 to 1927, the Ford Motor Company built more than 15 million Model T cars. Without a doubt, Henry Ford transformed the economic and social fabric of the 20th century." ~ Reprinted texts from here: ~ Reprinted texts from here: http://www.modelt.ca/background.html

Moreover, according to the official Model T website, "The first production Model T Ford (1909 model year) was assembled at the Piquette Avenue Plant in Detroit on October 1, 1908. Over the next 19 years relatively few fundamental changes were made to the basic design. By 1926 the design was so antiquated that the Model T could not compete with more modern offerings from competitors like Chevrolet. 1927 was the last year for Henry's lady, the "Universal Car. By the time the last Model T was built in 1927, the company was producing an automobile every 24 seconds." ~ Reprinted texts from here: http://www.modelt.ca/background.html

"CRISCO"

“Crisco ain't just for frying. You ever get a sticky something stuck in your hair, like gum?...That's right, Crisco. Spread this on a baby's bottom, you won't even know what diaper rash is...shoot, I seen ladies rub it under they eyes and on they husband's scaly feet...Clean the goo from a price tag, take the squeak out a door hinge. Lights get cut off, stick a wick in it and burn it like a candle....And after all that, it'll still fry your chicken.” ~ Kathryn Stockett, Author of The Help

Down Memory Lane - another photo from the 2011 archives

Does anyone remember when Crisco was packaged like this and sold for 51¢? I don't. The Piggly Wiggly Store Replica inside Pink Palace Museum features original packaging and pricing of store items.

And the story goes like this...........

"Clarence Saunders (1881-1953) is the father of self-service shopping. The son of a poor Virginia tobacco farmer, Saunders left home at 14 to clerk in a grocery store. He moved to Memphis in 1904 to work as a salesman for a wholesale grocery. While calling on customers, Saunders saw that many stores were failing because they did not control costs and overhead."

"Traditionally, shoppers brought in a list of the goods they wanted and gave it to a clerk who selected the items, packaged them, charged the order and had the bags delivered. This was time consuming, inefficient, and expensive. Saunders developed a plan to correct these problems that literally revolutionized the way we shop."

Furthermore, "he designed a systematically arranged store that offered self service/cash and carry shopping. He believed that if he offered lower prices than his competitors, people would wait on themselves, pay cash and carry the bags home. His store had a turnstile entry that forced customers to move in one direction and to pass all the items he offered. Impulse items like candy were stocked at the registers."

Finally, "after getting patent rights to his pricing and merchandising innovations, he opened his first store at 79 Jefferson in 1916. Our Piggly Wiggly exhibit is an exact replica. The origin of “Piggly Wiggly” isn’t clear. Sometimes Saunders said it just came to him; at other times he said he got the idea after seeing a group of piglets pushing and wiggling as they nursed. Whatever the origin, the name has always caught people’s attention."The Pink Palace Museum is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the Southeast. You can walk through a replica of the first self-service grocery store in the country, Clarence Saunders' Piggly Wiggly." ~ Reprinted text from here: http://www.memphismuseums.org/sub_exhibit-2590/

Have a wonderful Wednesday.
