Stormy skies over Whaleback lighthouse in the mouth of Portsmouth Harbor. A lone, leafless maple tree stands on the shore, a Christmas wreath decorated bench at it's base, stands watch over the ocean. Dark and ominous clouds fill the early morning sky in anticipation of the first winter storm.

Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse is located within Fort Constitution on the Piscataqua River in New Castle, New Hampshire, at the entrance to Portsmouth Harbor. The station was established in 1771 and was the 10th of 11 light stations established prior to the American Revolution. The tower was replaced in 1804 and fitted soon after with a fourth-order Fresnel lens. It was replaced again in 1878, this time by a new 48-foot cast-iron brick-lined tower. It was automated in 1960. The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation and is part of the Fort Constitution Historic Site, adjacent to an active Coast Guard Station.
