Paeonia lactiflora 'Postilion'
This heirloom peony was described thusly on one website: POSTILLION (sic) (Saunders, 1941). (Lactiflora x Officinalis]. (Semi-double).
On most sites that discuss this particular hybrid it is described in glowing terms as one of the most spectacular of the true red peonies. It certainly is a stunner. As a side note, there seems to be some confusion over the correct spelling of the name of this cultivar. I believe the correct spelling is 'Postilion', with one ell, not two.
This cultivar was in full bloom on May 29, 2013, when not more than a dozen others of the hundreds of varieties of peonies present were yet in bloom.
