I have seen a Florida Panther, like most such sightings a fleet silhouette in the headlights, but since I will almost certainly never get a photo, this oversize statue will have to do.

Puma concolor is the native apex mammal in the Glades and due to habitat loss and highways, their numbers were reduced to the point of near extinction. The breeding population was so small that five females from Texas were brought in to expand the gene pool that was throwing off damaged inbred offspring.

After one season, the ladies were returned to their native habitats and hybrid vitality has picked up. Fencing along main-travled roads that lead to underpasses have reduced highway fatalities. But in 2012 twenty were known killed out of an estimated population of less that 150.
