Magicicada Realism: 17-year Cicada Safari on Staten Island Sunday, May 26th, 11:00AM Nothing says now like the obstreperous periodical cicada--Magicicada septendecim, Brood II--now awakening from a 17-year-long slumber. Explore these noisy bugs with Eric K. Washington--former Staten Islander and veteran of the 1962 cicada emergence--who covered the 1996 emergence in the The New Yorker magazine story, “They’re Baaack!.” The bug hunt will first visit the Staten Island Museum exhibit near the ferry in St. George, “They're Baaack! Return of the 17-year Cicadas.” Then the tour will hop a city bus to Clove Lakes Park to see and hear firsthand what all the buzz is about...Don’t worry: despite their fearsome faces and sci-fi voices, the cicadas are harmless monsters: they do not--they cannot--bite or sting! A great photo outing here!!! Meet: Staten Island Ferry Terminal (Manhattan side). Enter and look for me toward the right. PLAN IS TO BE ON THE 11:30 FERRY!!! Bring: MTA fare card for bus; lunch or lunch money; trekking shoes; nerves of steel. Fee: $20 - which covers tour fee and suggested donation to the Staten Island Museum.
