June 11, San Mateo, CA: Today, I met with a CEO I had done some work with last fall. We were finally debriefing. At least that was the plan. We ended up spending a couple of hours just talking about our personal lives and how they had evolved. I actually started this exercise during the time that I was working for him. I finally apologized yesterday for how non-productive and low-functioning I had been last fall. He is a great "reader" of people. Even last fall he was asking me what was going on in my life. I don't think I could even talk about it without being emotionally (and completely) distracted for a few hours back then. I can't say that I can remember a time when I've been less productive. But by the end of the conversation, it was clear that he cared much more about me as a person than as a producer. That means a lot to me and I really appreciated it. Especially because he hired me out of bschool and gave me an opportunity last year when I REALLY needed it. All the photography stuff, my trip with my dad, even the job that I have now, could not have happened without his support. It was also very generous of him to share how he continues to change and re-evaluate his priorities, despite some pretty significant professional success.
