SmugMug > all-time keyword > serra > A tallow cooking stove found on the grounds of Mission San Juan Capistrano, the 7th of 21 California Missions founded by Father Junipero Serra. The Mission was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1812; excavations in 1935 unearthed the Missions's industrial center. Tallow, the rendered fat of animals such as cows and sheep, is used to produce soap, candles, grease and ointment.

These bells were damaged in the earthquake of 1812 and would no longer ring properly. Replicas now hang in the Campanario, while these now hang where the Campranile used to stand. The largest bell is named San Vicente. The inscription reads "Viva Jesus, Sn Vicente Advon De Los RRS PS Miros F VIcte Fustr IF JN SN TIAGO 1796”" The English Translation reads, "Praised be Jesus, San Vicente. In honor of the Re. Fathers, Ministers (of the Mission) Fray Vicente Fuster, and Fray Juan Santiago, 1796." The smaller bell is San Juan. The inscription reads, "ave maria purisima me fesit ruelas Ime yamo s. juan, 1796”" The English translation reads, "Hail Mary most pure. Ruelas made me, and my name is San Juan, 1796."

The campanaria was built after the campanile, the original bell tower, was destroyed in the 1812 earthquake. The two smaller bells are original, while the two larger ones, which had been damaged in the earthquake, are replicas. The two large original bells are on display at the location where the original campanile stood.

Renowned Mexican architect and stonemason Isidoro Aguílar designed the church and supervised the Ahachamai (Juaneno) Indians who built it. Laid out in the shape of a cross, it had a dome with six vaults and a campanile (bell tower) 37 meters high. Construction of the “Great Stone Church” began in 1797, and reportedly required the participation of the entire Ahachamai labor force. Finished in 1806, the church was the largest and most beautiful church on the West Coast of California, and earned the Mission the nickname The Jewel of the Missions. The Great Stone Church was destroyed in an earthquake which also took the lives of 40 natives, including two young boys who were ringing the bells, in 1812. Restoration work began in 1987 to prevent further damage to the beautiful ruins. Mission San Juan Capistrano is a registered Historic Landmark and designated as a National Historic Treasure.
