These stone pilings are called inukshuk. They were used by native peoples in the Arctic for various reasons (as navigation aids or to mark a place of importance...). Some are built in the shape of people (the logo designed for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics was based on one). I believe the ones pictured here were mostly built by hikers and tourists.
