Smoke in the morning sun....
Another shot from the warm days of summer. So many shots, so little time to process them... :-))

Yvette Garity- Lung Cancer Survivor

In 2003, Yvette enrolled in the AAMC Smoking Cessation Program. Through the program, she was able to quit smoking after doing so for 41 years.

After completing the program, she was able to enroll in a national lung cancer research study, which allows participants to get a chest X-ray or lung scan once yearly. Yvette thought she would be able to see how much her lungs had improved since she quit smoking. Instead, she was diagnosed with Stage 1 lung cancer.

The diagnosis meant that half of her lung needed to be removed. "I was shocked, I was scared," says her daughter Regina Acton, who is also a nurse. She had also lost her father to cancer, so hearing that her mother had cancer was extremely distressing. Yvette was also surprised by the diagnosis. Through all the years of smoking, receiving a lung cancer diagnosis was the last thing on her mind.

After many tears and much discussion Yvette and Regina decided they were going to be proactive in getting Yvette's cancer successfully treated.

Yvette's most recent lung scan showed that her lungs were clear. Now she treats every day as a gift.
