After completing a circuit around Lagarfljót, we cruised back through Egilsstađir, then proceeded east, up over the snow-covered mountains toward Seyđisfjörđur. This time, mercifully, the road was plowed and the skies were clear, making the mountain pass an easy and pleasant event. (But still - damn, did they ever have a lot of snow up there, for the beginning of June.)
This striking monument lies just off Highway 93, overlooking the town and the fjord of the same name. I would love to convey what the monument is about, or what the text on the front pillar says, but it's only in Icelandic, and I have not found any English-language description. As I would come to learn, a great many Icelandic towns have similar (if not necessarily quite so grand) monuments, perched up on hillsides, seemingly beholding the grandeur of the setting.
