Surfing Ducks !
Male Eider ducks in the waves: they truly are sea-going ducks !
Interesting to watch: Troon harbour has a largish regular collection of Eiders and in breeding season the males seem to want to impress the females. Other than the usual "cooing" and head flicks it was interesting to see single females motor out from the shelter of the harbour out to nearby shallows to feed when the sea was rough: she was followed by 10 or so males and looked as if she was taking them for a test to see which could pull off the best stunts in the waves. After diving and feeding for a while she motored back to harbour with the males following behind. Other females did something similar. Great entertainment !
