Almost 300,000 Tamils were interned in vast camps at the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka in May 2009. Sri Lankan forces routed the Tamil Tigers - alsso known as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) - after pinning them back into a narrow strip of land on the north east coast of the island. Estimates of the death toll vary wildly but it is believed that thousands of civilians died caught in the cross fire between the two sides. The decision to lock up the survivors behind barbed wire in camps was controversial, with human rights groups criticising conditions.
