Ceiling in Macy's State Street Store. Built in 1907, it’s the largest unbroken example of Tiffany Favrile glass in the world, containing over 1.6 million pieces. This shot is from the first floor looking up to the fifth floor dome. I went up to the fifth floor and got a closer shot which you can view here.

Think about this the next time you're in a Walmart, Target or any of today's modern stores.
December 6 2012 Macy's Christmas Windows

Going as far back as I can remember, Marshall Field's huge State Street Store in the heart of Chicago had elaborate animated Christmas displays in the windows. We took our kids there every year. Macy's has continued the tradition. We take the grandkids to see these every year now. This year the temperature was near 60; most years it's below 30.

I made a picmonkey collage for all of you who won't get a chance to see this.
Chicago - Marshall Fields & Company: Anybody from Chicago should know this clock on State Street; actually there are two, one on each corner of the old Marshall Field’s building on State Street. The 1st of the two clocks was installed at the corner of Washington and State Street in 1879.

For most folks shopping at Marshall Field’s, it was an experience in and of itself. Don’t quote me but I think this building even had its own “
L” stop from the train platform into the 2nd floor of the store. For some to walk out the door with their dark green kraft paper bags had its own self gratification… I guess. The window displays during the Christmas Season were worth going to see as well.

As with all good things, there must be an end. After Federated's acquisition of May Co. they announced that all Marshall Field's stores would convert to the Macy's nameplate in fall 2006. This touched off a firestorm of protest that continued long after the changeover was complete. They even have rallies every year in September under the clocks if you can believe it!

Although the State Street store has the original name plaques on the outside of the building, to look inside has the typical Macy's "cheap" feel in this photographers eyes. I haven’t stepped inside these doors in years.
