Fresco narrative mural paintings in the colonnade surrounding the church at Rila Monastery aka Monastery of Saint John of Rila in valley of Rilska River, Rila Mountains, Bulgaria. Rila is the largest Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. The wall and ceiling frescoes display bright Christian iconography including sacred art images of Jesus Christ, Holy Family, saints, and devils. The fresco paintings cover every inch of the walls, domes, and arches of the colonnade interior. The monastery was founded in the 10th century by hermit Ivan Rilski. The fortress monastery served as a depository of Bulgarian culture and language during times of foreign rule in Bulgaria. The oldest sections date to the 14th century, and the main church in the courtyard was built in the 19th century under direction of architect Petar Ivanovich,. The monastery complex is regarded as a masterpiece of Bulgarian National Revival architecture influenced by religious building Byzantine religious buildings and graced by domes and colonnades. It was declared a national monument in 1976 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
